Stabilized Irish Elk:
The "Irish elk," scientifically known as Megaloceros giganteus, is an extinct giant deer with enormous antlers, and fossilized remains, including antlers, have been found in Ireland and elsewhere, with some specimens stabilized by Raffir®.
About:
More than 20,000 years ago, early humans were drawing giant deer on the walls of caves in what is now Southern France. It's hard to imagine they weren't motivated by awe. Standing two metres tall at the shoulder - the height of an average doorframe - these enormous deer would have been a captivating sight. Especially the males with their huge antlers up to three and a half metres in width.
The earliest fossil record of the giant deer is from 400,000 years ago and the last fossil record is from 8,000 years ago. It is thought the species probably slowly died out due to a changing climate.
The products we offer are fossils dated from the Pleistocene geological era (before last geological period), it extends from 2.58 million years to 12,000 years BC.
Material Variation:
The natural colors of Irish Elk vary from piece to piece. Brown is the most common color. Some are lighter while others are darker.
Processing and dimensions
Irish elk is a hard material. However, it is not yet petrified. Therefore, normal tools for bone and horn are sufficient. Diamond tools are useful, but not necessary. We generally recommend hard steel tools a low processing speeds.
The dimensions depend a lot on the input material. Obviously, the raw bones have different sizes. Normally, they are found as fragments. Thus, the product sizes are also limited to smaller objects.
